The Power of Inclusion on International Disability Day

This past weekend, the waters of Hong Kong's vibrant coastline hosted the 2024 Around the Island Race (ATIR), a gruelling test of endurance and athleticism.  But for me, it was more than just a race; it was getting me one step closer to years of hard work, dedication, and an unwavering belief in the power of human potential.  It was a celebration of "Pushing Through Waves," an initiative close to my heart and one that embodies the spirit of International Disability Day.

International Disability Day isn't just about raising awareness; it's a call to action.  It's about celebrating the extraordinary abilities of people with disabilities and creating a world where inclusion is not just an aspiration but a reality.  This is precisely what "Pushing Through Waves" is all about. For Augustas Navickas and me, it's more than a documentary; it's a movement.

My Journey, Our Documentary:

"Pushing Through Waves" is a documentary film that tells the story of Augustas Navickas and me, two wheelchair para-athletes who, in 2019, made history by becoming the first duo with disabilities to compete in the legendary Hong Kong Around the Island Race.  The film isn’t just about the race itself, though that gruelling 45km journey against strong currents and towering waves is vital to the story.  It’s about our journeys – Augustas’s and mine – our struggles, triumphs, and unwavering determination to prove that disability is no barrier to achieving incredible things.  It's a story of resilience, perseverance, and the transformative power of sport. The film's stunning visuals of the race, the Hong Kong skyline, and our most intimate moments promise a powerful and unforgettable viewing experience.

But "Pushing Through Waves" is much more than just a film.  It’s a catalyst for change, a springboard to a more inclusive future for adaptive sports.

A Global Initiative for Adaptive Coastal Rowing:

Together with Augustas, I am deeply committed to creating a lasting legacy that extends far beyond the documentary. We're working with the Swift Racing, Playground Association and the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club to build a comprehensive program that promotes adaptive coastal rowing, breaking down the barriers to participation for people with disabilities.  Our goal is to create more opportunities for people to experience the thrill of coastal rowing, regardless of their physical limitations.  This means:

  • Accessible Programs: We're developing programs and resources to make adaptive coastal rowing accessible to everyone, including adapted equipment, skilled coaching, and a supportive community.

  • Community Partnerships: We're collaborating with the Playground Association and others to organise outreach programs and train coaches and volunteers, fostering a strong sense of community.

  • Global Impact: We aim to create a model for adaptive coastal rowing that can be replicated worldwide. The documentary will be a key tool in achieving this, inspiring similar initiatives and demonstrating the incredible potential of adaptive sports on a global scale.

  • The 'A Dare' Challenge: Augustas and I are launching "A Dare," a global initiative to encourage more para-athletes to compete in ATIR or similar races worldwide. We are addressing the financial barriers many para-rowers face by providing support and resources that enable them to chase their dreams.

Why Coastal Rowing Matters:

Coastal rowing, with its inherent challenges and the magnificent setting of Hong Kong’s waters, offers a unique and enriching sporting experience.  However, many people with disabilities face obstacles that prevent them from participating.  By making coastal rowing accessible, we empower individuals and create a sense of community and shared achievement.  Adaptive rowing isn’t just about physical fitness; it’s about mental well-being, social connection, and the pursuit of personal excellence.

My Vision for the Future:

"Pushing Through Waves" is more than just a documentary; it’s a testament to human resilience, a celebration of diversity, and a call to action.  We aim to:

  • Raise Awareness: The documentary will raise awareness about disability and inclusion in sports and the incredible capabilities of people with disabilities.

  • Inspire Change: We want to inspire individuals, organisations, and policymakers to challenge the status quo and create a more inclusive society.

  • Create Opportunities: We're creating opportunities for people with disabilities to live active, healthy, and fulfilling lives through adaptive sports and equipment access.

  • Build Community: Adaptive coastal rowing creates a powerful community where people with and without disabilities share experiences and celebrate achievements.

Celebrating Inclusion on International Disability Day:

International Disability Day is a celebration of human potential.  "Pushing Through Waves" is my contribution to that celebration. It’s a commitment to inclusivity, accessibility, and well-being in sports and all aspects of life. We can create a more equitable world by breaking down barriers and empowering individuals.  This documentary and the adaptive coastal rowing program are testaments to what can be achieved when we challenge limitations and celebrate the incredible potential within every one of us.  Join us in building a world where every individual has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Let's make waves together.
