Paragliding, with its breathtaking views and thrilling sense of freedom, is often perceived as a sport exclusively for the physically able. However, it's becoming increasingly recognised as a powerful tool for empowerment and personal growth, especially for individuals with disabilities. With the right instruction and adaptive equipment, paragliding opens a world of possibility, challenging perceptions and inspiring personal transformation. My own journey into this exhilarating world has been a testament to that.
My passion for flight began long before my accident. As a licensed fixed-wing glider pilot, the allure of paragliding had always been strong. But after my injury, the dream seemed to fade into the realm of the impossible. Then, in 2024, everything changed. I discovered Matthew Van Zyl, an adaptive paragliding instructor in Cape Town, South Africa.
Meeting Matthew at the beginning of 2024 and committing to his course was a pivotal moment. By the end of February, after three intensive weeks of training, I had earned my paragliding license. This incredible achievement fuelled my competitive spirit, leading me to pursue a sports rating. As I write this, I'm in Sedgefield, South Africa, continuing my training. This blog reflects the daily thoughts and lessons from this extraordinary experience.
The Instructor: More Than Just a Teacher
My instructor, Matthew, has shown me the multifaceted role of an instructor in adaptive paragliding. It's far more than simply teaching the technical aspects of flying; it’s about building trust, fostering confidence, and nurturing the human spirit.
Safety and Expertise: Matthew's expertise ensured my safety at every stage. He meticulously explained how to use the specialised equipment adapted to my needs, guiding me through harnessing, glider control, and flight dynamics. His knowledge created a secure environment that allowed me to fully embrace the experience.
Emotional Support: Paragliding, for someone with a disability, can be daunting. Matthew’s role as a cheerleader and motivator was crucial. He consistently encouraged me to push my boundaries, reminding me that I was capable of far more than I initially believed. His unwavering support helped me overcome self-doubt and build self-esteem.
Personalisation and Adaptation: Adaptive paragliding demands flexibility and personalisation. Matthew tailored the training to my specific needs and abilities. He adjusted equipment, provided extra guidance, and modified flight plans as needed, ensuring my comfort and safety.
Inclusivity Role Model: Matthew's inclusive approach is inspiring. His genuine respect and enthusiasm are contagious, promoting the concept that adventure sports are for everyone, regardless of physical abilities. He acts as a role model for inclusivity, encouraging broader acceptance and participation.
Life Lessons from the Sky
Paragliding has taught me invaluable life lessons, lessons that extend far beyond the sport itself.

Resilience and Adaptability: Paragliding demands adaptability, planning, and risk management. For individuals with disabilities, it represents a victory over self-imposed limitations. It's a testament to the power of resilience – a mental and emotional strength that goes far beyond physical capabilities.
Freedom and Adventure: The feeling of soaring through the air is indescribable. It’s a liberation from physical and mental constraints. Matthew helped me embrace this sense of adventure, fostering a belief in my ability to experience the joy and exhilaration of flight.
Courage and Growth: Confronting my fears was a crucial part of this journey. The courage required to overcome these anxieties was a testament to my personal growth. Matthew highlighted how challenges become opportunities for growth, transforming this experience into one of self-discovery.
Inspiring Others: A Ripple Effect of Empowerment
My experience isn’t just about my personal growth; it’s about inspiring others.
Redefining Ability: Watching someone with a disability achieve the seemingly impossible challenges the commonly held notions of what is possible. Matthew’s guidance highlighted my strengths, demonstrating that limitations can often be overcome through innovative solutions and a supportive environment.
Empathy and Understanding: My journey has fostered empathy and understanding in able-bodied individuals who’ve witnessed my achievement. Observing me embrace the thrill of flight has helped challenge assumptions about disability and ability.
Action and Advocacy: My success inspires action. Able-bodied individuals who’ve witnessed my paragliding journey are motivated to push their own boundaries and pursue ambitions they might have previously overlooked. This creates a ripple effect of empowerment and advocacy for inclusivity.
Philosophical Reflections: Soaring to New Heights
Paragliding isn't just physical; it’s a deeply philosophical experience.
Creating Meaning: Paragliding is an assertion of control and agency in the face of life’s challenges. It's a demonstration that we create our own meaning, even with limitations. The instructor’s guidance emphasises the importance of making choices and embracing life’s possibilities.
Celebrating Potential: Paragliding is a powerful statement of the inherent worth of every individual. It emphasises the potential for personal growth and fulfilment, regardless of circumstance. Matthew's belief in my abilities reflects the humanistic principle of valuing and empowering each individual.
The Subjective Experience: Every flight is deeply personal, shaped by individual perceptions and experiences. The opportunity to reflect on the feelings before, during, and after the flight enhances the overall transformative value of paragliding.
Conclusion: The Limitless Human Spirit
Paragliding for disabled individuals is a testament to the power of the human spirit. It’s more than just a sport; it’s a transformative experience demonstrating resilience, courage, and the boundless nature of human potential. The role of the instructor is crucial, providing technical skill, emotional support, and a commitment to inclusivity. My journey, guided by Matthew, has been a journey of self-discovery and empowerment.
It is a journey that challenges perceptions of ability, fostering empathy, understanding, and advocacy for inclusivity. It’s a reminder that the sky is truly the limit – a limit that only exists in our own minds. Paragliding has shown me that, and I hope it inspires others to take flight, too.
