As my journey to the beautiful wilderness around Sedgefield, South Africa comes to an end, it has left me with a renewed appreciation for nature and a deeper sense of self. Nestled between George and Knysna, this region reignites my love for the extraordinary beauty of the world around us. This trip was meant to move me closer to achieving my goal of obtaining a sports paragliding license, which I've planned to complete this year for some significant future endeavours.
Initially, I aimed to complete 100 flights to qualify for the sports license. However, a change in regulations by the South African Civil Aviation Authority increased the requirement to 200 flights, shifting my approach. Rather than focusing solely on numbers, I decided to fine tune my skills. During the trip, I completed 42 flights, bringing my total flights to 84. Despite falling short of the new requirement, my aim to become an adaptive sports-rated paragliding pilot still stands strong. The journey didn't end here.
My instructor, Matthew Van Zyl, and I chose to focus on enhancing my skills rather than rushing to fulfil the flight requirement. Given the limited time available, reaching 200 flights was impractical. Although it seemed like a setback, this decision allowed me to dig deeper into the subtleties of the sport, refining my abilities beyond just accumulating flight hours.
Training with Nigel, an Englishman and a new student of Matthews with a background in aviation, added a new dimension to my practice. A highlight of this trip was mastering the reverse launch with my trike. The reverse launch, which involves launching into the wind while facing the opposite direction, once seemed daunting and nearly impossible to me. Surprisingly, I not only achieved my first reverse launch but also preferred it by the time I left Sedgefield. This experience taught me an important lesson: anything is possible with perseverance, practice, and a willingness to step outside of comfort zones.
Paragliding has become more than a sport to me; it’s a powerful metaphor for life. Each flight, every adjustment, every successful launch and landing, carries a deeper message, one that is relevant both in the skies and in everyday existence. This journey has taught me invaluable life lessons:
Preparation and Planning: Just as careful preparation is essential for a safe paragliding flight, it is also crucial for navigating life's challenges. Setting goals, assessing risks, and understanding conditions are important both on the ground and in the air.
Adaptability and Resilience: Paragliding requires adapting to changing weather conditions, similar to how life demands flexibility and resilience in the face of unexpected events. My experience with the CAA regulation change taught me to adapt my focus from merely accumulating flights to improving technical skills.
Risk Assessment and Management: Skilled pilots assess potential dangers and make informed decisions to manage risks, a principle applicable to life’s big decisions as well.
Focus and Concentration: Maintaining focus is critical during flights as distractions can be detrimental. In life, focusing on priorities is vital for success.
Teamwork and Collaboration: Although paragliding might seem solitary, it often involves teamwork. Support from instructors, fellow pilots, and crew is crucial. In life, collaboration helps overcome challenges and achieve goals. Working with Matthew showed me the importance of shared learning and support.
Perseverance and Patience: Mastering paragliding requires dedication, practice, and endurance. These qualities are as essential in life as they are in flying.
Self-Belief and Confidence: Building confidence through repetition and improvement is key both in paragliding and in life. Successfully executing reverse launches exemplified this truth: believing in yourself can unlock your potential.
Reflecting on my experiences in Sedgefield, I find resonance with the wisdom of Rumi, a 13th-century Persian poet. His words hold deep insights:
"Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself." – Rumi
This perspective shift mirrors my journey. Initially, my goal was to achieve the license, simmilar to changing the world by becoming an adaptive sports rated paragliding pilot. Now, my focus has shifted inward to self-improvement, skill enhancement, and refining techniques. This inner transformation is perhaps more rewarding than any external achievement.
My time in Sedgefield wasn't just about flights; it was a journey of self-discovery, reflecting the interconnectedness of life with Rumi's wisdom. The wind, wings, and way created experiences richer than I imagined. The remaining 116 flights towards my sports license signify my commitment. This is not just about a license; it’s about embracing the journey and finding wisdom in challenges. The work and growth continue, and the sky remains open, a canvas for my ongoing story.
I'm deeply grateful to Anton, William, Zuki, and my wife, Carol, for their invaluable support throughout this journey. Anton's logistical assistance, William and Zuki's help with launches and landings, and Matthew—my instructor, who runs the Square1 tandem and paragliding training shop—belief in me and expert guidance have all been instrumental. This incredible support network has enriched my experience immensely.
